The PGA of Canada Remembers

Steven W. Hill, 62, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, in Boca Raton, Fla., from complications of life-long Type 1 diabetes. Steve was born October 15, 1951, to William Edward Hill (deceased) and Peggy Stevens Hill, in Rolla, MO. He grew up in the Midwest and graduated from Salem Community High School, Salem, IL, in 1969. He attended the University of Illinois and the University of Missouri where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1975. A lifetime, avid golfer, he was the individual medalist in golf in his college conference finals and went on to play in the national golf championships.

Steve was a life member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and served as the Director of Golf for Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach, MO, and for the city of Detroit, MI; and Director of Golf and General Manager for Royal Oaks Resort and Golf Club in Titusville, FL, and the Oak Meadow Country Club in Rolla, MO.

Steve was also a certified club manager in the Club Manager’s Association of America and a Superintendent Member of the Golf Course Superintendents’ Association of America.

In the years just prior to his death, Steve was responsible for opening and managing the Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton, FL.

Steve was a stickler for playing golf by the rules and believed that in golf you must play the ball as it lies according to the rules. He believed the same was true in the game of life... “take life as it comes to you and play by the rules.” Steve touched so many of lives, especially young golfers. He encouraged his players to not only play by the rules but helped them develop character and learn the personal lessons of honesty and integrity. “Practice with commitment and purpose” was his motto and “you will succeed in anything you do.” He knew that these lessons would take root in all aspects of their young lives.

Steve is survived by his wife, Chris (Sawyer) of Rolla, MO; three sons, Lucas (Ada Torres) of Ormond Beach, FL; Justin (Leslie) of Kirkwood, MO; Woodrow (Dove) of Denver, CO; and 4 grandchildren (Fernando Torres, Angelina Torres, Sami Torres, and Lacianna Grace Hill.) Also surviving are his mother, Peggy Stevens Hill and sister, Donna Hill Emmons, of Springfield, IL; one uncle, Philip G. Stevens (Cozette) of Bailey, CO; father-in-law, Dwayne Sawyer and brother- in-law, Greg Sawyer, of Rolla, MO; and sister-in-law, Jennifer Sawyer Baker of St. Charles, MO. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration of his life is planned for summer, 2014, to be held in Rolla.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
