PGA Championship of Canada Begins Tuesday

The 2013 PGA Championship of Canada sponsored by Mr. Lube and presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf kicks off Tuesday at Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ont.

Sixty-four players selected from the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC will vie for the P.D. Ross Trophy and a share of the $100,000 purse.

As has been the case since the championship was re-launched in 2011, this year's championship will be contested as a match play event with players from four brackets-Stan Leonard, George Knudson, Al Balding and Moe Norman-looking to advance through the five rounds to the final championship match.

Eric Laporte of Club de Golf Montcalm looks to become the first back-to-back winner of the championship of since the famed George Knudson in 1976 and 1977.

In addition to Knudson winning five championship titles, Norman (2), Bob Panasik (2), Wilf Homenuik (2), Al Balding (4), Bill Kerr (2), Gordon Brydson (2), Stanley Horne (3), Willie Lamb (5), James Johnstone (2), Percy Barrett (2) and David Black (3) have all won multiple times. However, Leonard-a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame-holds the record for most PGA Championship of Canada wins with eight.

Laporte has an opportunity to take over the No. 1 spot atop the PGA of Canada Player Rankings. He currently sits in the 10th with 132 points, but with 60 points awarded to the winner of the PGA Championship, he has an opportunity to jump to the top of the rankings pile.

Currently, Brian McCann (The Academy at BraeBen) is No. 1 with 189 points, while Mike Belbin (Royal Mayfair Golf Club) is in second with 181 points. Danny King (The Performance Academy at Magna) is third with 180 points. Dave Levesque (La Prairie Club de Golf), Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre), Brian Hutton, Bill Walsh (Fairtree Golf Centre) and Lindsay Bernakevitch (Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club) are ranked inside the top 10 and are in the field at Magna.

The player who sits atop the PGA of Canada Player Rankings presented by RBC at the conclusion of the PGA Championship of Canada earns an exemption into next month's RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.

Designed by famed Canadian golf course architect Doug Carrick, Magna Golf Club was awarded the Best New Golf Course award by SCOREGolf magazine in its first year of operation in 2001. In the 12 years since, SCOREGolf perennially ranks the 7,300-yard Magna inside the top 100 golf courses in Canada.

Magna is also known for its other impressive onsite amenities, including a striking clubhouse.

The event will get underway with the Mr. Lube Tournament for Life Pro-Am, an annual charity event in support of prostate cancer research. The first Pro-Am was held in Toronto in 2010 and has now expanded to Calgary. This one-day tournament will help to increase the profile of our partnership and work with Prostate Cancer Canada. As a partner of both the PGA of Canada and Mr. Lube Canada, Prostate Cancer Canada helps to battle this disease by building awareness and generating funds for research.
