Hometown Favourites
The squad from Lookout Point Country Club used their home course knowledge to take the lead after the opening round of the Hyundai PGA Scramble of Canada.
Led by PGA of Canada professional Dan Greenwood, the hometown favourites—David Broderick, Scott Murray, Julio Rocca and Ryan Valleriani—posted a net score of 18.3-under-par 53.7 and lead three teams by less than a shot heading into Saturday’s final round.
“The way this golf course was built on the Niagara Escarpment, with really tricky greens, it sure helps to have that home course knowledge about the speed and reads,” Greenwood said. “The first couple holes we had some nerves and were probably squeezing a little but too tightly. But Scotty made a nice putt on No. 2 and ‘Rye Guy’ holed out on the third hole from the bunker for eagle and that really got us going.”
Each of the 25 teams in the national final field at Lookout Point Country Club is comprised of four amateurs and a PGA of Canada Professional playing in a 36-hole Ambrose Scramble format. The final 18-holes takes place Saturday morning at the famed Walter Travis-designed gem with the first ever Hyundai PGA Scramble of Canada National Final champion being crowned at the closing ceremonies Saturday evening at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls.
Lookout Point Country Club is home to World Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit; two-time PGA Women's Championship of Canada winner, Cathy Sherk; five-time PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada winner Bill Kozak; and PGA TOUR Champions winner Rod Spittle. Spittle was on hand Friday morning to hit the national final’s ceremonial tee shot.
The Hyundai PGA Scramble of Canada saw thousands of golfers from across the country participate in the series of events this summer. The 25 teams participating at Lookout Point made it through local and regional qualifying events and will tee it up next week with a PGA of Canada professional playing on their team with the hopes of becoming the first ever-national champion.
Team Hickory Ridge sits in second at -17.6; Quebec’s Pinegrove is at -17.5 in third, while Angus Glen is fourth at -17.4. In total the top 10 teams are within 3.5 shots of the overall lead.
