Grenier Continues Solid Play at Mr. Lube PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada

Claude Grenier continued his solid play Thursday at the Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada.

Grenier’s two-day total of 5-under-par at Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club is four shots better than local favourite Ian Doig, Bruce Rogerson of North Granite Ridge and Nova Scotia native Kevin Dugas, who all sit at 1-under-par.

“I played quite solid golf today and hit a lot of fairways and greens,” Grenier said after a second round 2-under-par 70. “If you miss it offline around here your life becomes pretty difficult because the rough is very thick and the greens have lots of slopes.”

A PGA of Austria member for nearly 30-years, Grenier is playing this week on the advice of his friend Jean Laforce.

“I’m very pleased I took Jean’s advice and decided to play this week at the PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada.”

A trio of nice players—Dugas, Rogerson and Doig—enter the final round at Tangle Creek four shots back of Grenier.

Doig, a past PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada winner and local favourite, says he’d love to earn another national championship win, but also knows it won’t be easy.

“It’s never easy to win a national championship,” Doig admitted. “I’m a proud PGA of Canada member and I’d sure love to add another this week.”

Mike Burrows, Carl Pelletier, Dave Wettlaufer and Laforce sit T5 at even-par.

Daniel Talbot defended his Super Senior division title, besting Gar Hamilton and Hocan Olsson by a shot. In the Diamond divison, Atilla Becsy was crowned champion.

The PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada was first played in 1938 as a division of the PGA Championship of Canada. In 1973, the PGA Seniors' Championship of Canada became an independent event and has stayed that way ever since. Among the Canadian golf legends to win this championship are Stan Leonard, Moe Norman, Bob Panasik, Al Balding and Jim Rutledge. Norman won this championship a record seven straight years from 1979 to 1985, while Balding stunned the golf world by winning the championship at age 76 in 2000.

Ninety-nine year-old Gord Delatt; 94-year-old and five-time PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada winner Bill Kozak; 87-year-old Ben McCallum; and 86-year-old John Henrick will tee it up in a 9-hole PGA of Canada legends exhibition match Friday afternoon at Tangle Creek.

In 2015 Jim Rutledge captured his fourth Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada, winning at the venerable Credit Valley Golf and Country Club in Mississauga, Ont.

Attendance to the Mr. Lube PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada is free and spectators are encouraged to attend during tournament play.
