Claude Tremblay takes the lead at the BreconRidge CPGA Seniors’ Championship
Claude Tremblay of Repentigny Quebec takes the lead at the 2007 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship
OTTAWA, ON (July 21, 2007) – Claude Tremblay has emerged as the first round leader at the 2007 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship at The Marshes Golf Club in Kanata, Ontario. After play was suspended yesterday due to rain, Tremblay shot a four-under 68, and leads by one shot over former PGA Tour Member Jim Nelford of Markham, Ontario.
“The course set up was very fair, the CPGA officials set up tees in a great position; I feel that this course is perfect and is the reason I come back every year” said Tremblay who has won three Quebec Zone tournaments this year, including one last week. “I was very pleased with my iron shots today; I had five birdies under eight feet, which I was pretty happy about. I enjoy having the lead heading into the last round, and hope that I can continue with my momentum tomorrow”.
This is Tremblay’s third year playing in the CPGA Seniors’ Tournament, he was also in the final group in second place heading into the final round last year. Tremblay ended up finishing tied for seventh last year with 72-69-76 for a total of 217.
Jim Nelford, who made his Canadian Seniors’ debut today, is just happy to be competitive again. Since a boating accident in 1985 which almost took his life, Nelford just began competing once again this past year. “It’s just great to be back in competition, 15 years of not playing tournament golf is difficult and is one of the things that’s tough to get back, the nerves really get to you, so I’m very happy to get back to get into competition, it’s nice to get in a good round.” Nelford had a satisfying round shooting a 69, and nailed some great putts. He recalls that his best hole was the 11th where he said he had a Moe Norman birdie. “I had a great Moe Norman tribute birdie on 11. I teed off with a five wood and hit it 100 yards and it skimmed over a bunch of bulrushes, I didn’t think I would find my ball, but luckily found it on the other edge of the pond, from there I hit a six iron 180 yards then made a 15 foot putt, definitely a tribute to Moe Norman, nevertheless I am going to go work on my driving”.
Defending Diamond Division champion Frank Wibley of Orillia, ON leads the division by one shot over Don Renaud (Kanata, ON) and Doug Sullivan (Indian Mountain, NB) with a 75. “The more you come to play this tournament the more you really get to know the place, so I am enjoying the fact that every time I return it gets a bit more familiar, it is a beautiful course,” says Whibley who feels strong this year after his chemotherapy kept him from playing to his potential last year. “I played the second hole well, I had a perfect drive and I hit the first nine greens, so I feel like I played steady today, and hope I can take it into tomorrow as well”.
John Irwin of Summerside, PEI and Mike Veilleux of Ste-Julie, QC are tied for the lead with a one shot advantage over Bob Panasik, Windsor, ON for the Super Seniors division at 73.
Local favourite and defending champion, Graham Gunn shot an even par 72 hitting every fairway and 15 greens, sinking a 15 foot putt to save par on 18. “The course was in great condition, the greens were remarkably perfect after all of the rain yesterday, they were very straight, so it was tough for me to read my putts, my putting is not the sharpest right now so that was tough, I am also going to go work on my 110 yard shot for tomorrow as I had a few of those today that didn’t really work out for me”.
The final round will take place tomorrow, with tee times starting at 7:30AM with the last group departing at 11:30AM. For pairings and results please visit www.cpga.com
The Marshes Golf Club is one of the premier golf destinations and leading corporate-play facility in the National Capital Region. The Robert Trent Jones II design opened for public play in 2001 and has garnered many accolades. The 7,027-yard course includes six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s.
The $55,000 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship will be contested over two days and 36 holes after rain suspended play on Friday July 19th. The competition is open to Canadian PGA Professionals 50 and older. The Super Senior (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) division will also be contested over two days of 36 holes.
