Brian Hutton Takes the Lead at the Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship
Port St. Lucie, FL (November 22, 2010) – Brian Hutton of Burlington, ON took advantage of an early morning tee time as he posted a 4-under par 68 and dodged some blustery afternoon winds to take the first round lead at the Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Hutton, Head Professional at Southbrook Golf & Country Club, played a fairly stress free round that included five birdie against only one bogey to lead the National Championship by a single shot over 2003 champion Brett Burgeson of Airdrie, AB, Marc Girouard of St-Sauveur, QC, Adam Chamberlain of Bathurst, NB and 2000 Champion Graham Gunn of Kanata, ON.
“I had an early start and struck the ball great all day,” said the soft spoken Hutton, who used to reside in Florida at one time. “I love this event and I know my members and owners back home will be following my play so hopefully I can keep it going for them tomorrow.”
Chamberlain recorded the best finish of any player in the field as he was one over on the front nine before turning it up on the way in with an eagle on the par-5 16th hole and a great birdie on the difficult 18th hole to join the pack at 3-under par.
“I got off to a shaky start with bogies on the first and third holes but it seems like the round turned around when I made a bomb of a putt on the 10th hole,” said Chamberlain, one of the youngest Head Professionals in the country at 28 years of age. “My friends from the Atlantic Zone are down here with me and we’re having a blast so hopefully I can keep playing well right to the very end.”
Girouard and Burgeson have pretty much glued their names to the top of the leaderboard each and every year down in Port St. Lucie, Florida and it looks like 2010 will be more of the same. Two of the steadiest players in the field lived up to their reputations as Girouard made four birdies and one bogey while Burgeson made three birdies and zero bogies.
Gunn, a past Canadian PGA Senior’s Champion, is right in the thick of things and likely has some good vibes coming off his recent 3rd place finish in Italy in a European Senior Tour event.
David Zibrik of Vancouver, Dan Swanson of Surrey, BC, Mark Burke of Vancouver, Jean Chatelain of Mont-Tremblant, QC and Bradlee Ryall of Mississauga, ON are two shots back of Hutton after they all fired strong opening rounds of 2-under par 70.
Defending champion Ben Boudreau of Longueuil, QC sits in a tie for 35th place after an opening round of 75.
The shot of the day belonged to Marc Foucault of Hull, QC as he recorded a hole-in-one on the 166 yard par-3 6th hole.
Ottawa Valley leads the Inter-Zone competition by one shot over the BC Zone and two shots over the Quebec Zone.
The 36-hole Inter-Zone competition is compiled of four players on each team representing their Canadian PGA zone over the first two rounds. The team score is calculated from the best three out of four scores accumulated over the first two rounds.
The purse for the Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship is $85,000 with the winner receiving $12,000.
