Brian Hutton Comes From Behind to Win the Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professional Champion

Port St. Lucie, FL (November 24, 2010) – The man who was somewhat forgotten about during the final round will end up being the one that everyone will remember as Brian Hutton of Burlington, ON rolled in a 12-foot putt in front of the gallery to win the 2010 Titleist & FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship on the Wanamaker Course at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Hutton kept himself in it all day and pushed the pedal down on the back nine with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole and a birdie on the par-4 14th hole. With a shot to spare Hutton bogeyed the challenging par-3 17th hole for the third straight day in a row but his clutch par on the finishing hole was enough to seal the deal.
“I only looked at one leaderboard all day long and I really had no idea what needed to happen on the final hole,” said Hutton. “I was actually quite disappointed with my first putt on the final green but all I kept thinking was that making the final putt would either give me the victory or save me some money.”
Hutton, the Head Professional at Southbrook Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, ON, fired a final round 4-under par 68 to come from behind to win his first career Canadian PGA National Championship. Hutton stood off to the side of the Canadian PGA scoring tent to watch overnight leader David Zibrik of Vancouver and Marc Girouard of St-Sauveur, QC both miss their birdie putts that would have forced a playoff for the 3rd year in a row.
“This is absolutely incredible, I really can’t believe it,” said the soft spoken Hutton. “To win a National Championship alongside my peers and to beat a field of this caliber is pretty incredible and I’m going to enjoy every second of it.”
In addition to the Canadian PGA National crown, Hutton also takes home $12,000 for his fine play.
Girouard chalked up yet another great finish down at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida and while there was some obvious disappointment after getting out to a significant lead there is no discounting the talent and consistency of one of the greatest players from Quebec.
Girouard stormed out of the gate with four birdies on his first five holes but bogeys on 7, 8, 12 and 16 put the pressure on the Head Professional from Diamant Club de Golf to try and make a difficult birdie on the final hole to force the playoff. When his putt came up short on the final green he knew he let one slip away as he badly wanted that elusive National title.
Zibrik, Head Teaching Professional at the Westwood Plateau Golf Academy, was putting the volunteers to hard work as they tended to the leaderboards as he made three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey on the front nine to turn at 1-over. He settled down on the back side and made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes and had a 15-footer on the final hole to send it to a playoff but it wasn’t meant to be for the CPC rookie.
“I had a chance to force the playoff but I left the putt right in the jaws of the cup but a couple of inches short,” said Zibrik, the 2010 BC Zone Match Play Champion. “This was awesome. I had a blast all week and I can’t wait to come back next year to this great event.”
Both Zibrik and Girouard pick up $5,750.00 for their shared 2nd place finish.
Finishing two shots back of Hutton were 2005 & 2006 champion Danny King of Milton, ON and another CPC rookie Dan Swanson of Surrey, BC. They both take home $3,125.00.
Shot of the day belonged to Paul Schweyer of Sudbury, ON as he made a hole-in-one on the par-3 11th hole. Schweyer, Head Professional at Idylwylde Golf & Country Club, got to enjoy the celebration with his wife and baby daughter as they waited for him on the 18th green.
