BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship gearing up to be a Competitive Field
ACTON, ON (June 22, 2007) – This year’s BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship is gearing up to be an extremely competitive field. 2004 past champion Adam Brown (The National Golf Club of Canada, ON), 2005 champion Hocan Olsson (Mount Bruno Country Club, PQ), and last year’s winner and local favourite Graham Gunn (Heartland Players Tour) will all be competing to once again have their name etched on the trophy of Canada’s top Seniors’ Championship.
The tournament will be held July 19-22 for the third consecutive year at The Marshes Golf Club at Brookstreet Resort in Kanata, Ontario. This course is a favourite stop amongst Canada’s top seniors who are looking to excel at this year’s championship.
Last year, champion Graham Gunn fired rounds of 73-68-69 for a close two shot victory over Hocan Olsson to clinch the title. This year, Olsson is looking forward to another opportunity to reclaim the trophy that was his in 2005. “Since this is the highlight of my tournament calendar, I work a little bit harder on my game to try and fine tune it for the Marshes as it is a great golf course with excellent playing conditions, first class accommodations, great volunteers, and knowledgeable staff headed by Tony Dunn which all contribute to make it a true tour event” says Olsson. Brown, who placed in the top 25 in the past two years at the Marshes, says that “the location and facility for this National Championship adds to the tournament having the feel of a ‘major championship’”
The three past champions do not seem disturbed about their rivalries heading into the tournament. “We are a very close fraternity of friends and competitors. Who else would finish playing their guts out and then go out to watch and encourage other players. This is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and say hello if nothing else,” Gunn says.
Brown believes the rivalry will only strengthen the tournament; “I know all is relative but the strong field and the spectator support creates an atmosphere, a feeling for the player, that he is playing in something special, and that’s what makes this tournament the most important of the year”.
“I'm not too concerned about the competition,” adds Olsson, “ I know there will be a strong field but the outcome is solely up to me; the course sets up well for me and I like the layout which is an important factor to score well. I hope to do well again this year and an added ‘Hocan Olsson’ on the trophy would make me very happy and proud”.
Activities will begin Thursday, July 19th with the CAA Pro-Am tournament followed by the Lumiere Gala at Brookstreet Resort. The first round of the tournament will commence on Friday, July 20th.
The $55,000 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors’ Championship is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke-play competition open to Canadian PGA Professionals 50 and older. The Super Senior (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) division will be contested over two days of 36 holes.
