The Club
Founded in 1876, The Toronto Golf Club is the third-oldest private golf club in North America, after Royal Montreal Golf Club and Royal Quebec Golf Club. Originally located in the east end of Toronto, the Club relocated to its current location and began play on the H.S. Colt designed 18 hole championship golf course in the fall of 1912.
The Toronto Golf Club has hosted the Canadian Open five times and the Canadian Amateur Men’s Championship nine times, most recently in 1995 and 2017. Many Ontario men’s and women’s provincial competitions as well as international competitions have been played over the years at the Club.
The Toronto Golf Club was home to Mr. George Cumming, who was considered the father of golf professionals in Canada. Mr. Cumming held the position of Head Professional from 1900 to 1950, at which time his son, Mr. Louis Cumming served the membership until 1959. Mr. John Hunt maintained the position for 32 years and retired at the end of the 1990 season. Mr. Doug Rankin is completing his 33rd year as the Club’s 5th Head Professional and will be retiring at the end of the 2023 season.

- Job Summary

The Head Professional is responsible for the day-to-day management of golf operations and services including the Pro Shop, golf instruction, regular and event play, merchandising and related golf operations equipment. As a member of the Senior Management Group, the Head Professional works closely with the General Manager & C.O.O.
This position entails every aspect of the “golf experience” for all members and guests. The Head Professional is expected to be a leader, teacher and role model for all staff and is expected to supervise the efficient day to day operation of the Pro Shop and all golf operations.
- Responsibilities

- Develop and deliver an outstanding member and guest experience as per the Club’s standards and expectations.
- Understand, appreciate, and articulate the Club’s deep heritage and its important role in the various aspects of history in Canadian golf.
- Oversee the management and performance of all aspects of the Pro Shop and golf operations and service to ensure the highest standards are consistency maintained.
- Recruit, train, develop, performance manage and provide leadership of all golf operations staff
- Develop and manage the Pro Shop merchandising program, including purchasing, merchandising, sales and internal marketing, inventory management and financial performance.
- Oversee and enforce golf operations policies, procedures, controls, and fee structures to ensure the safekeeping of assets, inventory and resources.
- Develop and oversee golf instruction, clinics, camps and player development programs for all members with ensuring that members from all demographics and golf skill levels are accommodated by the golf program.
- Develop and oversee the Club’s golf calendar and programming that is appealing to all member demographics and skill levels, including children’s golf programs.
- Maintain a visible presence with the golf operations.
- Serve as a staff liaison to appropriate Club committees, including long-range planning committees.
- Work with the General Manager & C.O.O. and CFO with preparation and oversight of the operating and capital budgets, forecasting and monitoring.
- Work closely with the Manager of Golf Course Operations to ensure that appropriate standards and service for agronomy related practices and player care of the golf courses are consistently being maintained.
- Work with the Manager of Golf Course Operations and golf course Architect of Record to develop and plan future capital improvements to the golf courses and practice facilities.
- Provide oversight, monitoring and reporting of play, and pace of play, on the golf courses and ensure the enforcement of all rules and regulations governing the golf courses and practice facility usage.
- Foster and support equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within the Club through adoption of the Club’s best practices for an inclusive and equitable workplace.

- Class “A” member of the PGA of Canada in good standing, with Director of Golf/Head Professional experience.
- A dynamic, engaged leader with the ability to maintain a strong team by motivating and leading by example.
- Highly visible leader with a friendly, outgoing personality and focus on member service. A leadership style that lends itself to being the ‘face of the golf experience’.
- Has excellent communication skills along with the ability to provide direction and expectations, performance feedback and recognition that leads to positive outcomes.
- Strong business acumen with demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of the golf retail business, including purchasing, merchandising, inventory management, marketing, and financial performance.
- Strong administrator with excellent organizational skills.
- Collaborative work ethic with fellow senior managers and the entire Club team.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the active member-volunteer base at the Club to achieve results.
- Deep understanding of the Club’s culture, respect and traditions.
- Highly proficient instructor who is well-versed in the latest club fitting and teaching technologies.
- Maintain a creditable, professional level of golf ability.
- Ability to organize and oversee annual golf event fixtures and programs, including participation in the internal marketing and administration of the events and programs.
- Ability to implement, enforce and maintain all policies, programs, and plans as established and communicated through the COO.
- Provide support for new member integration and membership retention programs.
- Maintain and promote a well-respected and professional image within the Club, the industry and community.

- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software such as Jonas, Golf Genius, etc.
