Course Overview
Leadership Development in Golf Hospitality will help you elevate your game in the area of customer service and hospitality in the golf industry. During the course, you will develop an appreciation for golf hospitality and how important it is, not only for the satisfaction of your members and guests, but also for the success of your business and for you in your career as a golf professional. You will learn what it means to work in the hospitality industry and start to develop skills that will help you succeed. You will explore the concept of “unreasonable hospitality”, a term coined by Will Guidara, famed restaurateur and hospitality leader, and start to think about how you can be unreasonable in your pursuit of creating memorable experiences for the members and guests at your facility.
Throughout the 4 modules, you will engage with peers, complete discussions, and apply what you've learned to real-world scenarios and a course project. By the end of the course, you will have honed your ability to deliver exceptional hospitality, improving both your business success and personal growth as a golf professional.
Course Structure
The course comprises of four modules:
- Understanding the golf hospitality business
- Developing a hospitality mindset
- Building relationships
- Being unreasonable
This course runs over a period of two months. You have two weeks to complete the learning activities in each module.
The learning activities include:
Learn its!: Structured learning modules in which you will explore and engage with content that is related to the module’s topic.
Discuss its!: Discussions and sharing of ideas with your fellow learners.
Apply its!: Activities where you are challenged to apply what you’ve learned in the module to a real world scenario.
All the activities are mandatory and must be completed to the defined standards within the specified timelines for you to receive credit for this course.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Apply a hospitality lens to your work as a golf professional to improve business and personal success
- Develop your hospitality skills and refine your hospitality mindset
- Apply strategies for building relationships with members and guests
- Deliver unreasonable hospitality to your members and guests
Project : Design an “unreasonable” golf experience
In a group of three, design a memorable golf experience for your members and/or guests and create a plan for marketing it. Each element of the experience or event should be designed through a hospitality lens. Each group member is to take the lead on at least one component of the event; for example, pre-arrival and arrival, on course golf, post-golf, or fundraising. Work together to ensure that the member and/or guest journey is seamless from registration through to post-event follow-up. Focus on creating a highly memorable experience for the participants while being budget conscious.
Your final submission should include:
- Description of the event from start to finish
- Communication and marketing plan
- Golf operations plan
- Food and beverage plan
- Budget
The project plan should demonstrate that you have considered:
- How you will market the event to different generations.
- All touchpoints (e.g., arrival, registration, golf, post-event follow-up), ensuring each will have an impact on the participants. Consider mapping out the journey.
- How the team will work together to deliver the experience (e.g., turf maintenance, golf operations). Who will be responsible for each element of the event.
- How you will give participants a story to tell.
- How you will deliver a memorable experience on a limited budget through using the rule of 95/5 and strategic partnerships.
- How you will evaluate the success of the event.
We suggest you review the assessment rubric before starting to ensure you consider all key elements of the project.
After you've completed module 4, you will share your plan with others, discuss challenges, and explore collaborative solutions in a live session.
Expectations and Helpful Hints
- The Learn its!, Discuss its!, and Apply its! are mandatory components of the course and must be completed within the two-week duration of the module in which they appear.
- Complete each of the module components in the order in which they are presented. Typically, this means reading the Welcome and then starting the Learn it!. You may be asked to leave the Learn it! in some modules to complete a Discuss it!. Once you have engaged in the discussion, return to the Learn it! to finish the module.
- The Learn its! involve individual learning. Take the time to complete the activities in a thoughtful way. You must attempt each question before being able to progress. The Learn it! is designed to teach through discovery. If you don’t know an answer, give it your best attempt. The intent of the Learn it! is to help you further your knowledge, not to evaluate what you do or do not know.
- There is an Action Card within each Learn it!, which you can access at the top of the screen from the icon that looks like a notebook. Use this to document action steps you want to take and key learnings as you work through the material. You can print this out at the end as a reminder of what you have learned and the actions you want to take.
- The Discuss its! are intended to help you learn from each other. Discussion should be thoughtful, respectful, and promote group learning and the sharing of ideas. This is your opportunity to collaborate, debate, and share ideas with other PGA of Canada members.
- The course project requires you to work with two other learners. We suggest that you start to discuss and work on the project towards the start of the course. Don’t leave it to the last module or you will not be able to give it the time it requires.
